Welcome to the Oaktree School website. We are a friendly three form infant school in St. John's, Woking. The Oaktree School is a wonderful place to both learn and work, we are always busy and have lots of exciting events going on.
We have a dedicated staff team who strive to provide a stimulating and engaging curriculum for our children, who respond with enthusiasm and passion for learning. This website aims to give you a taster of our school, as well as providing regular updated information for both parents and pupils.
Please take a look at our Gallery and Class pages to find out what we have been up to so far this year and then play some fun games by accessing the Children's page. Keep up to date with our newsletters and calendar in the Parents section. You can also find out more about us or have a look at Our Prospectus in the Key Information section.
The Oaktree School opened in 1967. We admit children at the start of the academic year in which they are five until they are seven years old.
There are ten class bases. All Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes have a maximum of thirty children, which consist of three Reception classes, three Year 1 class, three Year 2 classes. Our Nursery Class opened in January 2020 with provision for 20 children per session. Our excellent staff team work together to provide a high standard of education and care which is consistent throughout each year group.
We maintain an adult to child ration of 1: 15 in Reception and support is available within the Year 1 and Year 2 classes. We are extremely proud of all that goes on at the Oaktree School and we welcome visitors. As our website demonstrates, the children at Oaktree are supported in their learning by dedicated staff, governors and parents.
At the Oaktree School we believe that every child is unique, with unique gifts and abilities. Our role is not merely to promote the individual learning of the child but also to draw out all his/her unique gifts and to see that each child is valued for his or her particular contribution.
We ensure that children have lots of opportunities to learn outside and engage in the natural world. We encourage independent thinking using the Edward De Bono ‘Thinking Hats’. We know that children are born with an insatiable curiosity and we therefore encourage all our children be curious, ask questions, explore possible answers and communicate their learning to others. We feel that this will enable our children to become lifelong learners. Our children enjoy learning in both our outside and inside the classrooms.
We ensure that our children understand their role as Eco Ambassadors of the future and believe that everyone can be a leader when it comes to improving our world. We have recently achieved our ECO Schools Green Flag for the fourth time and the Eco Schools' assessor kindly made the following comments.
“Well done to The Oaktree School staff and children! This is a very strong Green Flag application from a school which is clearly totally committed to the Eco-Schools awards scheme. Members of the Eco Committee are extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable and Mrs Sharkey is well supported by other members of staff. Their passion for environmental protection and the natural world around them is to be highly commended. The outdoor learning spaces, wildlife garden, butterfly garden and wildlife area are extensive and a real asset to the learning environment. An inspirational Eco School.”
On the 1st September 2013 the Oaktree School officially became an Academy. This change has allowed us to preserve the school’s unique learning environment and ethos.
On the 1st September 2019, The Oaktree School became part of The SWAN Multi Academy Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee and registered in England and Wales with company number 08622047. The registered office is Church Hill, Horsell, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4QQ.
We value working in partnership with other schools and as being part of the SWAN Trust, we are also part of Woking Schools Learning Partnership.
Over the last three years we have undertaken major works to improve premises and therefore improve our learning environment:
The money for these major works has been provided by successful bids we have put forward to the Government Funding Agency for a Condition Improvement Fund grant. We have been successful in all bids.
During last two years we have also completely renewed our Guided Reading books purchasing £15,000 worth of books for our children.
Come and see us again soon!
We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find any information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school direct with any queries you may have.
Thank you for visiting! I hope to see you at The Oaktree School soon,
Mrs Laura Sharkey
